Checklist: Essentials for a Successful Multi-Day Hike

Navigation and orientation 

  • Detailed maps of the area and a compass
  • GPS device or smartphone with navigation apps
  • Altimeter and barometer (optional)

Sleeping gear

  • Lightweight tent or hammock with rainfly and guylines
  • Sleeping bag with appropriate temperature rating
  • Sleeping pad or air mattress for insulation and comfort
  • Pillow (inflatable or stuffed with clothing)

Clothing

  • Thermal underwear and base layers
  • Hiking socks (synthetic or wool)
  • Quick-drying pants and shirts
  • Fleece jacket or insulating layer
  • Waterproof and breathable rain jacket and pants
  • Hat or cap for sun protection
  • Gloves and beanie (depending on the season)

Foot care

  • Sturdy and broken-in hiking shoes or boots
  • Blister patches and foot powder
  • Spare laces

Food and drink essentials 

  • Sufficient water (water bottles or hydration bladder)
  • Water filter or water purification tablets
  • Lightweight cooking gear (stove, fuel, cooking pot)
  • Nutritious and lightweight food (dried meals, energy bars, noodles)
  • Mug, utensils, and plate
